I've been reading online articles about this bird lately and I think it was always going to be destined for extinction. It needed huge flocks to survive, yet those flocks would've been 100% incompatible with the needa of modern aviation. Imagine half of the eastern USA seaboard airspace shutting down for a few days due to pigeon flocks?

There's also something deeply unsettling in the tale of the Pigeon's extinction, in that it's nature is similar to ours. Highly gregarious, large populations, mobile in nature and a big consumer of natural resources. Man always thinks of himself as separate from nature, but if such a vast and widespread vertebrate species can disappear off the face of the Earth in mere decades, it could happen to us too.Christian Perrinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06835955663432829705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526180646938954660.post-49281597713810388382014-09-04T12:49:35.237+01:002014-09-04T12:49:35.237+01:00The whole story is both incomprehensible and so si...The whole story is both incomprehensible and so simple.

I think I will put this on my reading list.

Cheers - Stewart M - MelbourneStewart Mhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04622420206244603688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526180646938954660.post-63743399067644201592014-09-04T09:52:14.681+01:002014-09-04T09:52:14.681+01:00Buena entrada, amigo. Every time I think of the Passenger Pigeon I'm filled with dismay at just how quickly a creature can pass from super-abundancy into extinction. We humans have a lot to answer for, but there always have been, and always will be, too many of the human race who are totally selfish and just don't give a sh1t. How long before we ourselves become the next 'Passenger Pigeons"? You know the really sad thing is, given our proclivity to manage and destroy, if the Passenger Pigeon were extant today it would be declared hyper-abundant requiring a cull.David M. What would the world look like today if they were all still alive? Sounds like an interesting and sad read...but something I would like. All my best.
